When historic metalwork is in a state
of deterioration, measures can be taken to reduce the ongoing damage.
These are usually meant to be temporary measures until such time
as budget and schedule can permit either a full restoration or rehabilitation.
When insufficient historic information is available or if a given
preservation program requires it, stabilization might be the only
appropriate treatment.

A detail of a mid-19thC metal tomb enclosure shows cast zinc rosettes
riveted on thin wrought iron flat bar at their intersection. This
intimate combination of metals has survived in a remarkable state
of conservation despite many years of neglect.

One of a few surviving cast iron posts showing a rise in
grade since it and the fencing was first installed. The
gates had been greatly modified and have lost their historic
integrity.

"The fencing surrounding this historic cemetery was flattened
and bent by a runaway vehicle. Stabilization measures would
include straightening and reinstallation of the fence to prevent
further damage or theft. With the proper funding, this damaged
section and the remaining historic fencing and gates could
be restored to its original configuration.

This small pedestrian wrought iron gate belonging to the
otherwise destitute cemetery fencing is an indication of
how the fencing system appeared originally and could be
made to look like again with a well planned restoration.

This 19th - century fencing has suffered from lack of maintenance,
damage and ill advised repairs. A full restoration of the
ironwork would bring back an important contributing feature
in this significant historic landscape.
