When original metalwork is
partially or entirely missing, it is sometimes desirable to
replicate original metal detail, to restore a historic composition
or a needed function. The reproductions are based on surviving
historic work or on reliable documentary research, including
historic photographs, other graphic representations and period
accounts. The specifications for reproduction are carefully
drafted in collaboration with design professionals and owners.
All new work is distinguished from original material so as
not to confuse the historic record through the use of different
materials, by marking the new work with the date of manufacture
and with good documentation.
Vintage Metalwork, Inc. can reproduce works matching
original materials, when a budget allows, otherwise comparable
materials are used to satisfy the end use.

A prominent historic site in Washington D.C. run by the
National Trust for Historic Preservation is being partially
restored for interpretation to the public. Much of the original
hardware is missing, but enough survived to allow this reproduction
of a hand forged wrought iron draw bolt with silver plated
brass knob for the main entrance door.

Reproduction railing based on the design of a 1830s Philadelphia
stair railing.

This is the same railing in the shop prior to final painting.
It was fabricated using the same assembly methods as the original
railing; mortise and tenon and riveting.

An 1840s cast iron railing had this wrought iron boot scrape
doubling as a buttress to the newel posts of an exterior stair
rail.
|
These forged replicas of the boot scrape were made to replace
missing ones on another set of stair rails. This not only
restored the original look, but also the strengthening function
for the cast iron newel posts.
