The American Institute for Conservation, (AIC), defines
"Preservation" as:
"The protection of cultural property through activities
that minimize chemical and physical deterioration and damage and
that prevent loss of informational content. The primary goal of
preservation is to prolong the existence of cultural property".
(see http://aic.stanford.edu)
Design professionals, conservators and homeowners are frequently
faced with what to do with historic wrought and cast ornamental
metalwork such as railings, fences, gates and balconies that has
fallen into disrepair, showing advanced corrosion and bent, broken
and missing elements. A choice is too often made to discard the
work and replace it with new generic work or nothing - leaving a
significant discord or void in the composition of an historic landscape.
Antique metalwork embodies high levels of design, craftsmanship
and ingenuity. It is also often made with irreplaceable, more resistant
materials and should be valued and treated with the attention deserving
all important contributing elements of historic architecture and
landscapes.

Vintage Metalwork, Inc. can provide a viable alternative
to losing your heritage in ornamental metalwork. Railings,
fencing, gates, lighting, outdoor furnishings of all sorts
in wrought iron and cast iron can now be stripped of corrosion
and failing paint using the latest in environmentally friendly
technology. Cleaning will restore the original detail in a
work and provide the best surface preparation for recoating.
The replacement of missing elements using both modern and
traditional methods can restore the original composition.
Rehabilitation projects can benefit from replication of original
work or an adaptation of an original design. All metalwork
is treated with coatings that will preserve and enhance the
original design intent of the work. We work with metals traditionally
used in ornamental and sculptural works including wrought
iron and cast iron with brass, bronze, copper, lead and zinc
detail.
